Skin Rash! Is it effecting you?
Eczema,
or dermatitis as it is sometimes called, is a group of
skin conditions which can affect all age groups. The
National Institutes of Health estimates that 15 million
people in the United States have some form of eczema.
About 10 percent to 20 percent of all infants have
eczema; however, in nearly half of these children, the
disease will improve greatly by the time they are
between five and fifteen years
Although Eczema usually appears when a person is still
in infancy or childhood, a person of any age can develop
symptoms of the disease. When you start to develop
symptoms of eczema, dry, red, itchy rashes appear on the
skin. Eczema can be isolated to one area or be present
in several areas on your body. Scratching or rubbing
often irritates the condition, and can even make it itch
more.
The severity of the disease can vary. In mild forms the
skin is dry, hot and itchy, while in more severe forms
the skin can become broken, raw and bleeding. Although
it can sometimes look unpleasant, eczema is not
contagious. With treatment the inflammation of eczema
can be reduced, though the skin will always be sensitive
to flare-ups and need extra care.
Eczema is often referred to as Atopic Dermatitis. This
is the most severe form of the skin condition. However,
there are other skin diseases that fall under the
umbrella of Eczema, which include:
- Seborrheic Dermatitis
- Nummular Eczema
- Irritant Contact Dermatitis
- Dishydrotic Eczema
- Allergic Contact Dermatitis
All of these types of eczema cause similar symptoms,
such as itching and redness. Blistering, minor
discharge, and peeling can also occur. However the
different types often vary in their level of severity.
