Glossary of Health Terms
Aids is caused by Human
immunodeficiency virus, or HIV. The virus takes away a
persons ability to fight infections. HIV and Aids cannot
be cured. Having HIV does not always mean you have Aids.
Aids is the final stage of the HIV virus. It comes in
three stages: Acute infection, chronic infection, and
Aids. It can take many years to develop Aids.
The HIV virus kills an important kink of blood cell
called the CD4 T lymphocyte, or T-Cell, This cells main
function is t fight off disease. As these cells die off
it makes the body more vulnerable to disease and germs
will then invade the body. When the body’s T-cell levels
get too low the person has Aids.
There are many misconceptions about how a person can get
infected with HIV. A person can only get HIV when the
body fluids come in contact with the infected person’s
blood stream. The fluids can enter the blood stream
through broken skin, linings in the mouth, anus or sex
organs.
The symptoms of HIV are flu-like symptoms that usually
go away within a week to a month. An individual may have
HIV for many years before feeling ill. Some signs and
symptoms of AIDS are sweating while you sleep, losing
weight, swollen glands, feeling tired, a fever that
won’t go away, and feeling sick constantly. Today there
are many treatments that can slow down the progression
of the disease. Consult your physician for proper
diagnosing and drug regimen.
