Glossary of Health Terms
An Allergy is our body’s
overreaction of our immune system to particular insect
bites, plants, food, and animals. These are known as
allergens. We are allergic to these allergens when our
immune system reacts and our body actually has symptoms
such as itching, sneezing, and watery eyes.
Some common allergens that cause allergic reactions are
dust mites, dander, mold, grass, tree pollen and
flowers. Some people also have food allergies and can
not have items such as seafood, nuts, milk or wheat.
If the allergen is in the air the symptoms will present
themselves in the nose, eyes, and lungs. Sometimes when
the allergen is ingested the symptoms manifest
themselves in the stomach, mouth, and intestines.
Not everyone has allergies. They have however been found
to be genetic. A child is more likely to have allergies
of a parent has them. If both parents have allergies the
child will have about a 75 % chance that they too will
suffer from allergies.
