Glossary of Health Terms

Angina is when pressure or a squeezing pain occurs in the chest. It is a symptom of Coronary Artery Disease. When plaque buildup occurs, the coronary arteries become narrow and blood flow to the heart is reduced.

The two most common types of Angina are called Stable Angina and Unstable Angina. Stable Angina happens when your heart has to work harder than it normally does, resulting in chest pain. This pain will go away after taking Angina medication called nitroglycerin or by resting. This allows more blood flow to the heart by relaxing and widening the arteries. Unstable Angina does not require physical exertion to bring on episodes of Angina. There is no pattern to the occurrence and may require emergency treatment and it is a sign that a heart attack could occur soon. Those who have previously had a heart attack or who have Coronary artery disease are most likely to have Angina. Older adults are more likely to have Unstable Angina. It is important to seek medical help so that your Angina can be treated appropriately.
