Glossary of Health Terms
Asthma has become a very well known
disease in the bronchial tubes or airways in the lungs.
When asthma occurs, there is tightening in these
airways. Asthma is a chronic condition and those who
have it live with it every day of their lives.
When a person’s asthma has been triggered the bands of
muscle surrounding the airways tighten and air is unable
to move freely. When the air moves through the tightened
airways it makes a whistling sound called wheezing.
There are some common triggers that cause asthma to
start or worsen when the person comes in contact with
them. Some common triggers are; allergens like pollen,
mold and pet dander. Infections like colds, flu, and
sinus infections. Irritants from cleaning products,
perfumes or pollution and cigarette smoke. Exercise,
strong emotions and weather changes can also cause an
asthma attack.
Symptoms will sometimes vary from one attack to another.
Some of the most common asthma symptoms are wheezing,
chest tightness/pain or pressure, shortness of breath
and coughing. Your doctor can run tests to determine if
you do have asthma and give you the proper treatments
for your condition.
