Glossary of Health Terms

There are two types of Bronchitis, Acute Bronchitis and Chronic Bronchitis. Acute Bronchitis usually only lasts 2-3 weeks. Chronic Bronchitis is when the lining of your bronchial tubes become permanently inflamed and thick. You are considered to have chronic bronchitis if you cough most days for at least three months a year for two consecutive years. It occurs especially in people who smoke.

Acute Bronchitis is usually cause by a virus after you have had a cold or the flu. It can also be caused by exposure to cigarette smoke, household cleaners and smog.

When you have acute bronchitis your main symptom will be a cough that often brings up mucus. Sometimes you may have a mild fever, wheezing when you breathe and feel tired and out of breath. Most symptoms will only last 3-4 days, but the cough may last 2-3 weeks.
