Glossary of Health Terms
Cholesterol is a fatty like
substance that is carried by lipoproteins which are
known as low density lipoprotein (LDL) and high density
lipoproteins (HDL). LDL is associated with Bad
cholesterol and is the main cholesterol carrier. It
produces plaques in the arteries which then block blood
flow to the heart and brain. HDL, which is associated
with good cholesterol takes the cholesterol from the
arteries to the liver for metabolism.. Those with high
cholesterol levels increase their risk for stroke,
coronary heart disease and peripheral vascular disease.
Desirable cholesterol levels should be less then 200.
Cholesterol levels 240 or above are considered high. HDL
levels should be 40 or above. LDL levels should be less
than 100.
Many people have high cholesterol levels due to a diet
with excessive amounts of animal products such as eggs,
whole milk dairy products, and meat, or a high
production of cholesterol by the liver. Symptoms that
are related directly to high cholesterol levels are
serious health problems such as coronary heart disease,
stroke, and peripheral vascular disease.
Angina is the most common symptom of coronary heart
disease. It is caused by inadequate blood flow to the
heart because of blocked coronary arteries. Symptoms of
a stroke are weakness on one side of the body in the
face, arm or leg, dizziness, slurred speech, confusion,
and vision problems. Peripheral vascular disease are
tingling, pain, numbness, coldness, and delayed wound
healing in the legs and feet.
Cholesterol levels are measured by a blood test often
referred to as a lipid profile or a lipid panel.
Cholesterol levels may be helped by medications or diet.
