A fungus called Candida is the culprit for a common disease known as a yeast infection. Yeast infections are very common in women as 3 out of 4 women will actually experience this type of infection during their lifetime. Men can also get yeast infections although they don’t usually experience symptoms like women. Men usually get yeast infections from their female partner when having unprotected sex. The man can also pass it back to her if having unprotected sex. It is wise to avoid sexual intercourse while treating a vaginal yeast infection.

Candida albicans is the name of the fungus of the yeast family. This is what causes vaginal yeast infections. This particular fungus is a normal part of the skin, mouth, intestinal and vaginal tract environment. The fungus grows rapidly when the PH balance is thrown off and it changes from acidic to more basic in the vagina. This rapid growth causes infection. Some of the causes of PH changes in your body can be linked to hormonal changes, antibiotics, diabetes, low immunity, injury to the vulvar, and spermicidal.

Some common symptoms of yeast infections are soreness, burning sensation, a white clumpy discharge, foul odor, and swollen vagina. Vaginal yeast infections can be treated by over the counter medication and prescription medication. If you are having these symptoms and you have never experienced a yeast infection you should see a doctor so you can be properly diagnosed.
