Standard Medical Treatments:

Besides an improved diet, other simple steps to relieve the irritation some
hemorrhoids cause include:

  •  warm soaks (sitz baths) three or four times a day
  • cold packs
  • good hygiene. (Be gentle about cleaning, though. Frank recommends using a soft, moist pad or even rinsing in the shower as an alternative to wiping.)

A proctoscopy  can be preformed by your doctor. This is where the rectum is viewed and examined for the possible presence of cancer. A barium enema and a sigmoidoscopy may be recommend, if cancer is suspected.

In mild cases, hemorrhoids are traditionally treated with high-fiber diets, increased liquids, rectal suppositories, anorectal pads and creams which contain corticosteroid drugs to reduce swelli8ng and inflammation.

Internal hemorrhoids must be treated on an out patient basis using the proctoscope. Some types of hemorrhoids can be treated by constricting them with tight rubber bands which causes them to wither within a few days.

Using liquid nitrogen (cryosurgery) is another method of removing hemorrhoidal distensions. A procedure referred to as monopolar direct current therapy is another outpatient technique where Procaine solution is injected into the hemorrhoid.. This approach has had some success and for some physicians is the treatment of choice; however for large hemorrhoids it is sometimes ineffective. If these measures prove unsuccessful, a hemorrhoidectomy may be recommended.

Surgical Options: A hemorrhoidectomy refers to the procedure which is preformed under general or epidural anesthesia, whereby the hemorrhoid is clamped, and secured with a sutture ans the surgically cut off.

A laser technique is available, it does not require hospitalization or general anesthesia.

Most hemorrhoids can be taken care of medically; however, the methods that have been employed are viewed by the victim of hemorrhoids as unpleasant. Laser surgery and monopolar  therapy seem to be generally regarded as better therapies.. Hemorrhoids typically recur.
