Avoid topical anesthetic preparations which contain benzocaine.
They will numb the area temporarily but tend to cause more
irritation. When you bend down to pick up something heavy, bend
your knees instead of your back. Let your thighs do the work not
your stomach and back. And as you lift, breathe out freely,
so that pressure doesn't build up in the abdominal cavity.
Exercise regularly to keep your bowels active. Brisk walks,
low-impact aerobics, yoga or dance classes are all excellent ways
